An inverter changes DC voltage to standard AC voltage. Battery powered inverters are available for 12, 24, and 48 volts DC. A few inverters are also available for 32 and 36 volts on special order.
Grid tie inverters convert the DC voltage from the solar panels directly into standard AC voltage and feed into your house power, without the use of batteries. "Utility Interactive" type inverters use batteries and can also tie to the grid to feed back any extra power, or for backup power.
